別教

(別教, 别教)

The 'different' teaching of the [lang id =1028]華嚴宗. Both the Huayan school and the Lotus school are founded on the [lang id =1028]一乘 or One Vehicle idea; the Lotus school asserts that the Three Vehicles are really the One Vehicle; the Huayan school that the One Vehicle differs from the Three Vehicles; hence the Lotus school is called the [lang id =1028]同教一乘 unitary, while the Huayan school is the [lang id =1028]別教一乘 Differentiating school.

別即隔別不同之義。 謂別前藏、 通， 別後圓教， 故名別教。 （別前藏、 通者， 謂此教獨被菩薩， 不涉二乘所修也。 別後圓教者， 謂此教所談法門， 行相隔歷次第， 而不圓融也。 ）
